Vegetable Garden

This year we put in a vegetable garden.  We used to do one every year but trees grew taller and threw more shade so unless we moved the garden, it was futile.

I didn't want to put it smack-dab in the middle of our backyard for fear of it being an eye sore.

Here is a picture of the backyard before the garden.

Here is another picture of it, decorated for Fall.

My neighbor, who has an amazing garden every year, suggested I put it in the center of my backyard but incorporate it into my small perennial garden, flanked by two cast iron urns with a wrought iron fence between them.

Brilliant.

In front of the iron fence, I put my herb garden.  I love the way the Day Lillies contain it.

I love to walk through the garden every morning with my coffee and see what's growing.

Love snow peas.  I wish I had room for more of them.  I don't think any of them will make it to the table because my 2 1/2 yr. old likes to pick them and eat them.

A garden wouldn't be complete without some yellow squash.  Isn't it amazing how these guys can go from tiny to huge overnight?

Some yellow bell peppers.

Green beans just started to appear.

I planted 21 tomato plants; mostly heirloom tomatoes.  Here is a cluster of Roma Tomatoes.

I also planted a row of sweet yellow onions and a row of red onions.  I love onions but my husband hates them.

Check out these Hot Hungarian Peppers, they're huge.  There are seven of them ready to pick so I am going to make a brine this weekend and can them.  A lot of work for one jar but it's worth it.

I can't wait for the tomatoes to ripen so we can make fresh salsa.  I'm also going to make pesto and freeze it.

At the back of my garden, I placed this wrought iron scrolly-thing, and yes that is a word.  At least it is today on my blog.  I have my mandevilla vine growing up it.  I can't wait for it to bloom.

What's growing in your garden?

Kaye

  2. I think this is an absolute perfect solution. AND I did try my husband into doing the same thing, however I think I lost him when I mentioned arbor and pathways. Anyway, we did the same garden and guess who does NOT weed his garden, yep HIM. Next year I think I am going to win the battle, I just won't mention the arbor and pathways until later.

  3. Love your garden! We have tomatoes for canning, green bell peppers, jalepenos and banana peppers. There's lettuce, corn, green beans, snow peas, beets, cucumbers and kohlrabi. Plus we have blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, acorn squash, zucchini and butternut squash. Plus we have a couple of vines of grapes, two cherry trees, an apple and a peach tree. It sounds like a lot typing it in here, but it's set out in a way that doesn't take much space and is tucked away in corner of the yard that isn't very visible unless you are outside.

  4. Wow Kaye, the garden looks amazing. I've only had a couple cherry tomatoes and a beef steak. We might get pumpkins, maybe. Great job!

  5. Wow! Lovely garden. You found the perfect place for it too! And your pictures are great, I really like the one of the bell peppers coming in. Salsa and pesto sound so good right now!

And you're amazing to have caught up on my posts! I love the nightstand makeover you did for your daughter. The flowers, pull handle, and the scrapbook paper inside all made it the most incredible nightstand for a little girl! Awesome job!

Hope you had a great weekend!
